ProfileJulaybib

Julaybib (may Allah be pleased with him) is known only by that name, which is thought to be a diminutive of a word for a woman's wrap. His real name, his father's name and his tribe are not recorded, and the early biographies do not say where he came from. According to the early biographies, he was very short and dark and not good-looking, and was mocked for it, and had no tribe to protect him. He was poor. According to the early biographies, the Prophet ﷺ was fond of him, and brought him forward in gatherings.

According to the early biographies, the Prophet ﷺ once asked an Ansari for his daughter, and when the man was delighted, and thought that he was asking for himself, said that he was not asking for himself. The man asked who it was for, and said that he would consult her mother. When the mother heard that it was for Julaybib, she cried out that they would never marry their daughter to him. The girl heard, and asked who had come, and was told that it was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, asking on someone's behalf. She said that they should not refuse the request of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, for he would not let her be lost. Her parents agreed, and the Prophet ﷺ prayed that Allah would pour good on her, and not make her life hard. The Prophet ﷺ did not force marriages, and asked for people who had nobody to speak for them. The report is in the Musnad of Ahmad.

Abu Barzah told that the Prophet ﷺ was on an expedition on which Allah gave him spoils, and asked his Companions whether anyone was missing. They named some men. He asked again, and they named others. He asked a third time, and they said no. He said that he was missing Julaybib. They searched among the dead and found him beside seven men he had killed, and they had killed him. The Prophet ﷺ stood by him and said that he had killed seven and then been killed, that he was his and he was his. Then he lifted him in his arms, there being no one to hold him but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and a grave was dug for him, and he put him in it, and no bath is mentioned (Sahih Muslim). According to the early biographies, the girl he had married was blessed with wealth afterwards, and no widow of the Ansar gave more in charity.
