ProfileUmm Salamah, Hind bint Abi Umayyah
Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) was born Hind bint Abi Umayyah. She and her first husband, Abu Salamah, were among the early Muslims. They migrated to Abyssinia and then to Madinah, and her own Hijrah was one of the hardest. Her family kept her in Makkah, her husband's family kept their young son, and for about a year they were separated. She was finally allowed to leave, and she made the long trip to Madinah, escorted for much of the way by Uthman ibn Talhah, who was not yet Muslim.
Abu Salamah died around 4 AH from a wound that opened after Uhud. The Prophet ﷺ then married her and took on the care of her children.
She is best known for a moment at Hudaybiyyah. The Muslims were disappointed by the terms of the treaty and were slow to obey the order to sacrifice their animals and shave their heads. The Prophet ﷺ went to Umm Salamah, and she advised him to do it himself in front of everyone. When he did, the others followed. She was also a respected teacher of hadith.
