ProfileAbu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah
Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) was named Amir ibn Abdullah, and everyone used his family name Ibn al-Jarrah. He accepted Islam very early, through Abu Bakr, and he migrated to Madinah. The Prophet ﷺ called him the trustworthy one of this ummah, and he was counted among the ten Companions who were given the good news of Paradise.
At Uhud, when the Prophet ﷺ was wounded, Abu Ubaydah helped to pull the rings of the helmet from his face, and in doing so lost his front teeth. He bore the loss without complaint.
Later, as commander of the Muslim armies in Syria, he took command from Khalid when Umar made the change, and he treated Khalid with respect. He led at Yarmouk and received the surrender of many Syrian cities. In 18 AH, a plague broke out in the region of Amwas. Umar wrote offering to call him away to safety. Abu Ubaydah declined, saying that he would not leave his army. He died of the plague that year.
