ProfileAl-Fadl ibn al-Abbas

Al-Fadl (may Allah be pleased with him) was the eldest son of al-Abbas and the elder brother of Abdullah ibn Abbas. According to the early biographies, he was known as Abu Muhammad, though he did not have a son by that name, and he was born some years before the Hijrah. According to the early biographies, he grew up in Makkah with his father, and was trained by him to be his deputy, and did not declare his Islam until the Conquest. According to the early biographies, he was said to be strikingly handsome, as were the family of Hashim.

According to the early biographies, after the Conquest the Prophet ﷺ kept him close, and he was the first to carry the banner of the Banu Hashim after Islam, at Hunayn. According to the early biographies, he was among those who stood firm with the Prophet ﷺ when many fled.

Ibn Abbas told that the Prophet ﷺ made al-Fadl ride behind him, and al-Fadl told that he kept on saying the talbiyah until he threw the stones at Jamrat al-Aqabah (Sahih al-Bukhari).

Ibn Abbas also told that al-Fadl was riding behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at the Farewell Hajj when a woman of the tribe of Khath'am came, and al-Fadl began to look at her and she began to look at him. The Prophet ﷺ turned al-Fadl's face to the other side. The woman said that the duty of Hajj had come upon her father when he was old and weak and could not sit firm on his mount, and asked whether she could perform Hajj for him. The Prophet ﷺ said that she could (Sahih al-Bukhari).

Amir ash-Sha'bi told that Ali, al-Fadl and Usamah ibn Zayd washed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and put him in his grave (Sunan Abi Dawud, graded sahih).

According to the early biographies, he went out to Syria with the armies of the conquest, and died there, either in a battle or of the plague of Amwas in 18 AH.
