ProfileHamnah bint Jahsh
Hamnah (may Allah be pleased with her) was the daughter of Jahsh and Umaymah bint Abd al-Muttalib, an aunt of the Prophet ﷺ, which made her his cousin. She was the sister of Abdullah ibn Jahsh, Abu Ahmad and Zaynab bint Jahsh, who became the Prophet's ﷺ wife, and the niece of Hamzah. According to the early biographies, she migrated with her family and was married to Mus'ab ibn Umayr, the man who taught the people of Madinah before the Prophet ﷺ came.
According to the early biographies, after Uhud the women came to the Prophet ﷺ to ask about their dead, and he told each of them the news. He told Hamnah that her brother Abdullah had been killed, and she asked mercy for him, and then that her uncle Hamzah had been killed, and she asked mercy for him, and then that her husband Mus'ab had been killed, and she cried out and wept.
Urwa told that none were named among those who spread the slander against Aishah except Hassan ibn Thabit, Mistah ibn Uthathah and Hamnah bint Jahsh, along with others whom he did not know. Aishah told that the Prophet ﷺ asked Zaynab bint Jahsh about her, and Zaynab said that she kept her hearing and her sight from claiming anything she had not heard or seen, and that she knew nothing but good about Aishah. Aishah said that Zaynab was her equal among the wives of the Prophet ﷺ in standing, but that Allah protected her because of her piety, while her sister Hamnah began to take up her sister's cause, and was among those who were destroyed (Sahih al-Bukhari). Aishah told that when her innocence was revealed, the Prophet ﷺ spoke from the pulpit, and recited the Qur'an, and when he came down he ordered the punishment for two men and a woman (Jami at-Tirmidhi, graded sahih; Sunan Abi Dawud, graded hasan). The commentators name Hassan, Mistah and Hamnah.
According to the early biographies, after Mus'ab she married Talhah ibn Ubaydillah, and bore him Muhammad, the eldest of his sons. According to the early biographies, the Prophet ﷺ said of Talhah after Uhud that whoever wished to see a martyr walking on the earth should look at him.
